Many thanks to everyone who came to the AGM at the Beach Hut April 2026. Thanks to Jane for hosting us. We now have 21 members ranging in age from 16 upwards, and lots planned for the coming year – a village garden party, another beach BBQ, the revival of the Surf Club, plans to tie in with the Eisteddfod y Garreg Las which is being held so close to us, and lots more.
Wayne Lewis from 4Llan was invited to speak to us about recent developments; we were especially interested in their support for the Pontgarreg School Field and what might become of it, affordable housing ideas and a plan for a Local Energy Club.
4Llan serves four local parishes, and was set up to support community projects. It is a community benefit organisation, not for profit. It is a vehicle for doing things – getting funding, setting up groups to move projects forward, seeking advice and funding.
Housing – speaking to Barcud, looking at sites for housing, talking to landowners, locals, planning. Pontgarreg field for example – we have met with community, council etc. General feeling so far is they want green space and maybe a few houses. Villagers would keep hold of the land and be very much involved in design and running of it. An asset lock means it could not be sold on.
Energy – a local famer expressed interest in a turbine towards Synod Inn; this has been pursued with the National Grid. It’s near the substation. Initial feasibility study commissioned, environmental and technical assessments. PV and turbine. Part feed to local business direct, then an energy local club – 100 houses in the area to buy the cheap electricity. This avoids pylons. Batteries can minimise waste. Supported by the Welsh Government for Smart Local Energy Systems. Grants, share issue and a commercial loan. Funders are keen.
Cymuned – On 25 April at Caerwedros Hall the new swift tower is being opened by an expert. Other projects are welcome.
Getting involved – £10 for a year. Organisations can join.
Members can join meetings for specific projects, suggest ideas for projects and spaces to use, gain support for projects and hear all the latest updates.
